Feeling wanderlusty
Jesus Christ, I miss traveling.
I once lived somewhere where I could hop a cheap flight and be pretty much anywhere in Europe in under a few hours. One Friday afternoon when I lived in Saint-Lô, I was browsing the internet looking for something to do that weekend and found a sale on Ryan Air—50 euro round trip Paris-Dublin. Done! What followed was a super random weekend in a dirty hostel with Irish accents and a weird mummy-dude in a churchyard and way too much beer.
There are a ton of things I don’t miss about being abroad, and I ton of things I love about living in Brooklyn. Now I spend my weekends writing, which is what I should be doing. But my stories wouldn’t be half as rich without all the experiences I’ve had and the people I met along the way.
i used to live in France and now live in NYC and I have the same insatiable wanderlust appetite as well. I have made travel my priority and manage to plan trips as often as money and time will allow and when I have no trips on the horizon, I turn towards to the city. Thankfully we both live in a city where you can eat around the world and experience different cultures without a ticket so I guess what I’m saying (to both of us since I should take my own advice!) is get out there and enjoy New York. It may not be Paris in Spring time but for $2.50 on the subway you can end up far from where you started 🙂
Good luck!
I know, NYC is amazing and I do my best to appreciate it. One of my favorite destinations is the Cloisters. It almost feels like Europe!
I just visited the cloisters for the first time last Fall and was so surprised to know I have been living here for almost 3 years and never even heard about it. Such a cool place!
This is something I need to do more of. I never got to have the experience of traveling a lot. And now I have a full-time job to tie me down and my writing to occupy my work-free hours. I’m saving to take a year off of work and to focus on my writing. I think I’ll have to make some travel plans during that time.
I did my year of traveling right after college, before getting a job. I was broke pretty much the whole time and would probably be further along in my career had I not taken that year off, but I wouldn’t trade it in for anything. I’d love to do it again, but as you say, life gets in the way.
I’m stuck with the same travel bug as yourself. It’s a beautiful curse for sure!
When I lived in southern Spain for about 9 months, I had a love/hate relationship with RyanAir. On the one hand, 50 euro from Alicante to Oslo is amazing. On the other hand, one can only hear “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” so many times before going insane.
Hahaha, I only flew them that one time as I mainly traveled by train. All I remember is the ridiculous rush at the gate because there are no assigned seats. And of course the no free anything on the plane.
Oh gaaawd, the rush to the gate. And yeah, the flight attendants’ constant sales pitches for liquor, electronic cigarettes, jewelry, etc. got super annoying.
